A press conference announced on Wednesday that a new television anime of Yōichi Takahashi's Captain Tsubasa manga has been green-lit for a April 2018 premiere on TV Tokyo and other stations. The new anime will recount the story starting from the manga's beginning.
The new anime has the following cast:
Yuko Sanpei as Tsubasa Ōzora, a soccer prodigy
Kenichi Suzumura as Genzō Wakabayashi, a genius goalkeeper
Ayaka Fukuhara as Tarō Misaki, the "golden partner"
Mutsumi Tamura as Ryō Ishisaki, known for his face block
Takuya Satō as Kojirō Hyūga, a key rival
Katsuyuki Konishi as Roberto Hongō, the legendary No. 10 on Brazil's team
Toshiyuki Kato (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable, Full Moon O Sagashite) is directing the anime at the studio David Production. Atsuhiro Tomioka (Inazuma Eleven, Pokémon XY) is in charge of the series scripts, and Hajime Watanabe (Ginga e Kickoff!!, School Rumble) is serving as character designer and chief animation director. Hayato Matsuo (Hellsing Ultimate, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, The World God Only Knows) is composing the music, and Yoshikazu Iwanami is directing the sound.
The original soccer manga revolves around 11-year old Tsubasa Ōzora, a boy who loves soccer and is recognized by his coach Roberto due to his skill of the sport. Tsubasa goes with his coach to Brazil in order to train for the World Cup.
The 37-volume Captain Tsubasa manga ran in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 1981 to 1988, and it inspired three previous television anime series, four anime films, several original video anime projects, and a stage play. The manga is available in about 20 countries — including France, Italy, and Mexico — and an Arabic edition shipped in the Middle East in January.
The manga spawned additional sequels and spinoff series, including Captain Tsubasa: World Youth Tokubetsu-hen Saikyō no Teki! Oranda Youth, Captain Tsubasa: World Youth, Captain Tsubasa: Road to 2002, Captain Tsubasa Golden-23, Captain Tsubasa: Kaigai Gekitō-hen in Calcio, Captain Tsubasa: Kaigai Gekitō-hen En La Liga, and the ongoing Captain Tsubasa: Rising Sun in Shueisha's Grand Jump magazine. In total, the manga series has100 compiled volumes and 70 million copies in print. The manga has also spawned three novel volumes.
