The February issue of Kodansha's Monthly Young Magazine revealed on Tuesday that writer Jun'ichi Fujisaku, artist TATE and Shindosha will launch a new manga in the magazine's next issue on February 20. The first chapter will have 56 pages. Shindosha is credited with the original concept and work. Fujisaku is writing the manga, and TATE is drawing the art.

Fujisaku posted a Tweet about the new manga, revealing its title as Kasei Zombie (Zombie of Mars) — the same title as a novel he wrote with Production I.G and illustrator Yūsuke Kozaki. Micro Magazine-sha published the novel last August 5.

The novel is set in Tokyo's Takadanobaba neighborhood, and follows a girl named Kanon as she confesses to her upperclassman Akiyama and goes on a date with him to see a movie he wanted to see, titled Kasei Zombie. While she is in the bathroom, there is an earthquake and she is trapped. When she finally escapes, she finds that Takadanobaba is overrun with zombies and has been blockaded off. Then, she meets a man in a blue helmet who fights zombies with a bat.

The magazine's description of the manga matches the beginning — with Kanon's confession and movie theater date with Akiyama — but it does not reveal the title or anything that happens after Kanon goes to the movie theater bathroom.

Micro Magazine-sha posted a trailer for the original novel last June.

Fujisaku is best known for his involvement in the Blood anime franchise, credited as planning assistant on Blood: The Last Vampire, director and script supervisor in Blood+, original concept supervisor and episode scriptwriter in Blood-C, and scriptwriter on Blood-C: The Last Dark. He also wrote scripts for Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, The Beast Player Erin, and Atom The Beginning.

TATE drew the art for the manga adaptation of Gakuto Mikumo's Strike the Blood light novel series. The manga ran in Kadokawa's Monthly Comic Dengeki Daioh magazine from 2012 to December 2016. Kadokawa published 10 compiled book volumes for the manga. Yen Press publishes the manga in English, and shipped the ninth volume last December
